When buying a vehicle in Spain a contract must be filled out and presented at the tax office, and a fee paid depending on the age and make of the vehicle. This is normally the buyer’s responsibility unless an agreement between the vendor and purchaser is previously arranged.

Cars that are 12 years old or over pay a fixed tax of 40€ for cars with under 2.0 l engine, and 80 € for 2.0 l engines or more. By law, a vehicle on foreign number plates may only stay for 6 months in Spain before requiring registration in this country.
